EP Review:Gypsy and The Cat's, 'Heart's a Gun"

Gypsy and The Cat have pulled a Beyonce and surprised everyone with their new slice of pop music with their EP, ‘Hearts a Gun’.

No strangers to the pop music scene, Gypsy and The Cat have had previous success with ARIA and Hype Machine charting singles to their credit, three songs in the triple j Hottest 100, plus international chart and touring success in places like Germany, Denmark and Sweden under their belt.

The EP is a taste of things to come with an album on the cards for 2016 and a tour to be announced very soon. ‘Heart’s a Gun’ delivers six tracks full on falsetto-led psyche pop, with rolling synths and tiny injections of UK alt rock and electronica. It’s a big juicy mix of pop music.

The title track opens the record, with synths and whistles, points to the excellent whistling skills demonstrated here. As the song kicks off you can hear the UK Alt-rock influences coming through on the electric guitars. Although there may be other genres weaving their way into the verses, the chorus itself is the glorious pop release you’d been waiting for and it makes you want to drive around in your car fist pumping

Red Wine And Cigarettes is the second cab off the rank, with a darker, grittier undertone coming through the bouncy synths that are peppered throughout the song. The echoing vocals in the chorus sing longingly for you guessed it, red wine and cigarettes.

Collaboration with Client Liaison brings the track, Evolution which is a synth driven track with summer song written all over it in bright neon. Wasted Days brings in an intensive mix of drums, synths and piano that seem almost chaotic at first but work together in the most surprising way. The vocals float over the piano and synth riffs and tell the story everyone can relate to of wasted days.

Fire creeps in slowly and then hits just at the right time with a full blown dance synth sound. The harmonies of the Gibb brothers shine on this track during the track, making the chorus the obvious hero. The vocals croon asking questions of a lover throughout the song with a most recognisable ‘oooooh’ feature throughout the song.

Finishing up the EP is Sunday, the vocals sound like a lazy Sunday afternoon but the music sounds like a Saturday night. This song is almost like if tropical punch could sing, something makes you feel like you could be on a beach listening to it and it is equal parts of poppy goodness.

‘Heart’s a Gun’ is like the surprise of finding a bag of party mix lollies in your cupboard, total party sweetness.  The EP is available now with the promise a tour announce coming very soon.
