EP Review: Banff 'Future Self'

Kicking off into his premiere release, 'Future Self', Banff has produced one of the most refreshingly mature debuts we’ve heard for sometime. His sparkling musicianship marries beautifully with soaring vocals that swirl into a marvellous aura of sounds and emotion. The previous Little Casino frontman has stepped out on his own, and stepped it up to a whole new level with his solo project. His debut EP highlights how far he’s come as a musician and a songwriter and will have you captivated within seconds.

There is a subtle #1 Dads influence stringing the tracks together, with laid back, gentle guitar riddled tunes. All Again even have a slight taste for Tom Snowden’s falsetto that cuts right through the layered sound and into your heart. With a chaotic collection of sounds and instruments all swirling together Banff masterfully brings order to the chaos in this beautiful outro crescendo. The whispering end will leave you with chills down your spine and the stiff hairs on the back of your neck … but like in a good way.

The base thumps into your heart as the light melodic guitar jumps into to spur into the first released track from Banff, . The subtle keys chime in bringing a bright spark to the ethereal layering of Banff’s auric vocals that fill your ears and take you on a glorious journey into another world. Anyone Else is an adorable addition to the record. Think late 70’s, community hall, vinyl floorboards and late night prom and you’ve got this chilled out love song. “I don’t want anyone else, my love my love” brings a late night pining cry that softly builds into a mood setter arthouse film.

Banff really stands out on his own with ‘Future Self’. It’s not often one comes across a new act that shines so brightly. Fusing together a indie pop ideas with a soulful auric vocals the lad is able to create a sound that is refreshing, easy to listen to, but with a complexity to be marvelled at. We’re expecting big things from this lad and we are certain he’ll deliver.
