EP Review: Tkay Maidza 'Switch Tape'

When Adelaide’s Tkay Maidza let ‘Brontosaurus’ loose in 2013, ears far and wide pricked up. Gradually spreading the Tkay word on high profile collaborations with Bok Bok and Kilter, among more, the eighteen year old rapper seemed to seal the deal on the razor-sharp ‘U Huh’, sending the industry into a hype-frenzy.

The ‘Switch Tape’ EP, Tkay’s first extended offering, is a taster of the reasons why the pint-sized MC has been making such big waves. I mean the word taster literally; three of the five tracks are variations on ‘U Huh’, which helps the release to feel more like a single with bonus tracks than an EP. However, showcasing shiny production and a fierce rap game, ‘Switch Tape’ highlights a unique artist who has enough more than enough spunk to continue the rise. Opening track ‘U Huh’ is an indication of that in itself; neon-bright with mass sing-along potential and a carefree attitude, Tkay’s clearly being entirely herself, and it’s working a treat.

Moving into banger territory, ‘Finish Them’ brings the rave to the EP with incessant beats and hyperactive vocals. Some may find it relentless, but take it to the dance floor and there’s no doubt that it’ll get a crowd going. Ensuring that there’s enough diversity to keep things interesting, third track and latest single ‘Switch Lanes’ quickly shifts the release down a notch. With the production courtesy of Paces, silky sweet chorus vocals interchange with tenacious verse over calypso drums, forming a clear EP (and likely Summer) highlight.

KLP and Luke Million respectively take over the reins to close ‘Switch Tape’, remixing ‘U Huh’ into equally summery anthems.  As commendable and catchy as the tracks are (KLP, that added chorus, it won’t leave my head), I can’t help but feel that I’d rather hear what else Tkay has to offer; reach the end of the EP and it feels like there’s still unfinished business to address. But I guess that time will tell what Tkay Maidza has up her sleeve, and if it bears any resemblance to what she’s shown on ‘Switch Tape’, then we’re in for yet another treat.
