EP Review: Meg Mac, 'MEGMAC'

At first meeting, Melbourne chanteuse Megan McInerney comes across as a little mysterious. Softly spoken in interviews and piercing in photographs, she’s a rare artist whose life story won’t be found jumping off her sleeve. However, it is when Meg Mac sings that her true self emerges. It’s fitting that her debut EP is self-titled; ‘MEGMAC’ is an introduction to a powerhouse artist who commands that you sit up and take notice.

One listen of ‘MEGMAC’, and it’s immediately clear that this is a confident, fully assured debut. Opening quietly with the bright piano of current single ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’, Meg’s vocals immediately draw the listener in, effortlessly creating crescendos in the transitions between her restrained low register and powerful belt. Earnest and direct in delivery, when she assures you that ‘everything is gonna be alright’, you cannot help but believe her.

It is the first two tracks that not only summarise this EP, but summarise the overall sound of Meg Mac; whilst ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ clearly highlights McInerney’s traditional soul influences and the incredible potential of her voice, ‘Turning’ introduces the impact that artists such as James Blake and Frank Ocean have played on her music The production subtly sways into the electronic, forming a smooth bridge into the phenomenal centrepiece of the EP, ‘Grandma’s Hands’. R&B fuelled and minimalist in arrangement, the track builds over rumbling synths and jarring vocal samples throughout its timeline, leaving Meg practically shouting the memories of her past.

Themes of lies and mistakes close ‘MEGMAC’, showcasing a vulnerability that assists in cementing Meg’s charm as an artist. The songs may be familiar to fans – the harmony-riddled, stomping soul-pop of ‘Every Lie’ precedes the commanding ‘Known Better’ – yet they remain fresh, refusing to tire on repeat listens. In fact, it’s my belief that the same could be said for the EP as a whole. ‘MEGMAC’ is a captivating release that unfolds the initial mystery of Meg Mac, and its near-flawless performances, beautiful production, and soul-laden influences can only help it to stand tall for considerable time to come.

Meg Mac is rolling up her sleeves and demanding that you sit up and take notice.

MEG MAC is set for release on September 12.
