Live Review: Gang Of Youths, MT WARNING, Twin Haus @Alhambra Lounge, May 15

Last night at Alhambra Lounge kicked off a string of shows for MT Warning & Gang of Youths down the east coast of Australia. The electric atmosphere perpetuated in the dim lighting as the audience prepared themselves for the laid-back indie rock genre that was set in store for the night.

For the Brisbane show the guys were supported by Twin Haus, a four piece alternative rock band with progressions reflective of the early Foals era. Their unique blend of synth rock was the perfect way to warm up the crowd. With tracks such as 'Mark Twain' & 'Salvia Dali' the band had the crowd wrapped around their little fingers, waiting in anticipation for the instrumental breakdowns that quickly became an obvious trademark of the band. Their recently released EP Waxen Myriad was extremely catchy and is available for download now on iTunes.

Not long after that, it was time for MT WARNING to take the stage. Kicking off with haunting sounds of Burn Again, lead singer Mikey climbed, jumped and moshed his way through their spectacular (albeit way too short set). Jam packed full of mesmerising tunes and heartfelt lyrics, every song appeared to resonate with the audience and grabbed their attention in a way that only a truly great song-writing can. Much to their credit, they also managed to convince the timid crowd to fill the space in front of the stage. The debut album from MT WARNING, Midnight Set is a beautiful combination of stunning lyricism and visual imagery and is also available now on iTunes.

Gang of Youths finished off the night with a perfect balance of light and shade. Their signature snarl was reminiscent of The Killers and gave the crowd opportunities to truly experience the music as well as dance along to it. With a voice so evocative it could make even the manliest of men feel something, Riverlands gave everyone a chance to catch their breath and reflect on the more emotional moments of their lives. Evangelists, an indie rock slow jam rounded off the night nicely along with Poison Drum which gave us a nice excuse to shout "I'm not afraid" at the top of our lungs to no one in particular.

MT WARNING are supporting Gang of Youths at both their Sydney and Melbourne shows, so make sure you get down to see them. And as with any gig, don't forget to support the support.
