Live Review: Kisschasy with Beth Lucas, Luca Brasi @ The Triffid 30.10.15
I was just pushing twelve when Kisschasy released ‘United Paper People’, an album that would go on to be beloved by Australians of a certain vintage. Their career, which encapsulated two other quite good albums, also covered the decade leading up to my twenty-first birthday; a time which, I believe you’d all agree, might fairly be described as a pivotal time in any life. Despite six years since that last album, ‘Dinosaur’, the goodwill Kisschasy had accumulated was displayed amply by the heaving, sold out band room at the Triffid. Most punters also looked around their early- mid- twenties, and the air was heavy with a feeling that we were seeing so much more than a band tonight; we were, I think many of us, watching a musically accompanied montage of what might be termed the Golden Days of our lives.
Valley Fiesta: Saturday Roundup
Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley played host to the 19th Valley Fiesta, an annual event showcasing the best of the suburb’s vibrant culture through a three-day program of music, food, art, fashion, markets, and photography. We joined the thousands of Brisbanites who braved the drizzle to catch some of the amazing local and national talent performing across the second afternoon and evening of the fiesta.
Live Review: The Rubens, Saskwatch & Winterbourne @ Max Watt's Brisbane, 23.10.15
Earlier this year we sung Hallelujah to the return of some of our favourite New South Welshmen as The Rubens dropped the first taste of the sophomore album ‘Hoops’. Since then it’s been nation wide Rubens fever, with their latest Hoops tour being a time for drinking and a time for dancing; and boy did we do both.
Live Review: Hands Like Houses @ The Brightside 15.10.15
If you’re a frequent gig goer, you’ll know that sometimes not everything goes according to plan when attending them. From unexpected traffic to the heavens opening up during an outdoor concert or even worse if you’re crazy enough to brave the weather as it comes to line up all day, you never really know what’s going to happen.
Album Review: You Beauty’s ‘ILLYWHACKA’
Look, there’s a very short version of this review and its: God damn! You Beauty have done it again! But what kind of reviewer would I be if I left it at that? A shit one. So I’m going to look at their second LP ‘ILLYWHACKA’ in a bit more detail, ahead of its launch online today and general release tomorrow, Friday October 23.
EP Review: Jesse Davidson's 'Lizard Boy'
Jesse Davidson has released his second EP ‘Lizard Boy’ and will be embarking on a national tour with his band to celebrate its release this week.
Live Review: RUFUS @ The Tivoli 16/10/2015
An atlas can be described as a book of maps and charts. Greek Mythology would tell us that Atlas was the titan who held the sky on his shoulders and was turned to stone by a snake laden monster/queen.
EP Review: Nicholas Allbrook 'Walrus'
Welcome back to the wide, weird world of Nicholas Allbrook. The ‘Walrus’ EP is the crooked POND front-man’s first offering since his delightfully titled 2014 debut LP ‘Ganough, Wallis and Fatuna’. Once again, we feel like we’ve woken up sleazy; wretched after a big night out, drawing the curtains only to find we’ve somehow woken up in a dystopian apocalyptic future rather than the bleak suburban existence we thought we were living. Allbrook once again sees himself as a shaman of the coming End Days, and he cackles and writhes with hedonistic glee.
