King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Release New Album Today

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have released their new album ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’ today, and to celebrate their seventh record the band has unveiled the hectic video for their latest single Trapdoor.

Directed by Jason Galea, the video sees the band dressed as ghosts, roaming around a mysterious castle in a way that only King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard can pull off.

‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’, out via Flightless/Remote Control Records, was recorded using nothing but acoustic instruments, in stark contrast to the darker, heavier material that has filled their recent live sets. The end result is a lovely, lifting record that still evokes the same exuberance with a more pastoral, communal feel.

Unlike the last two albums, this release has no overall theme tying it together. Rather than writing the album together as a group in the studio, the various members wrote the material separately before coming together to add the finishing touches. The end result is the product of a band deeply connected to the point where they all reached the same conclusions.

The challenge of embracing acoustic tones also lead to some experimentation to fill out the sound, using instruments they had never played before to produce unique melodies and a joyous jumble of ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’.

It should come as no surprise that traditional recording methods were pushed aside when it came to this LP. The bare bones of the songs were laid down in a shipping container that sat in vocalist Stu Mackenzie’s parents’ farm on the Victorian coast of Australia. From there, the band stitched the rest of it together with overdubs and new recordings in bedrooms and home studios.

‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’ is unlike anything King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard has ever done before, but that shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone.
