EP Review: 'Oh, Hunter' Hayden Calnin
Triple threat, singer-songwriter-producer, Hayden Calnin is set to release his second EP, ‘Oh, Hunter’ on Friday, February 21.
Here’s three tracks you may have missed which we think deserve your attention and your ears.
Hayden Calnin - White Night
With his new single White Night Hayden Calnin has joined the list of talented Aussie progressive electronic artists such as Boo Seeka, Vallis Alps, and Japanese Wallpaper. White Night is a beautiful atmospheric song with a powerful anthematic chorus that’ll get Bic lighters and mobile lights waving. It sounds like Dustin Tebbutt re-mixed by Japanese Wallpaper with the soul of Vance Joy. White Night has a significantly more accomplished sound than his early singles Summer (2011) and For my Help (2012), which heavily sported Bon Iver and Matt Corby influences. Calnin says White Night is a taste of where he’s going as an artist, remaining faithful to that ‘late night’ vibe, while bringing forward his melodic side and pairing it with the dynamics of a full live band.

Castlecomer – Fire Alarm
Sydney 5-piece Castlecomer’s new single Fire Alarm sounds like the love child of Phoenix’s 1901 minus the thick synth and Last Dinosaurs’ I Can’t Help You. It’s a super bouncy indie rock track that’s guaranteed to get you humming along and tapping your feet. It’s energy, simplicity, and use of “woah-ohs” makes this an instant indie rock banger. The single is also a step in a different direction for the band, compared their more classic rock inspired single Fugitive. Fire Alarm was written after a fraught 24 hours when the band were dropped from their label and found themselves at their lowest.

CREO – Light It Up
Slated as one of the best live acts gigging in New South Wales, CREO have released their intriguing new single Light It Up. Built upon a delay drenched guitar riff and a driving beat that keeps you bopping along, the song rises to a fun chorus perfect for any road trip. It’s a great mix of CREO’s own unique alternative rock sound with very subtle echoes of their influences of Springsteen and the Smashing Pumpkins. Light It Up is a great follow-up to their previous single Suay, which scored the band the feature video spot on Triple J Unearthed as well as airplay on Triple J. CREO will be touring throughout the rest of the year in support of Born Lion and will appear at the Rolling Stone Live Lodge Party.
