BANFF Drops Sophomore Single, Announces Support Tour With Montaigne

Brisbanian Benjamin Forbes, better known as BANFF, is on the cusp of becoming a household name with the announcement he will be supporting Triple J darling Montaigne on her upcoming “Life of Montaigne” tour and the impending release of his second single ‘The Great Unknown’.

Many sounds have gone into the mixing bowl that is BANFF: a pinch of Snakadaktal, a dash of Trouble With Templeton, the War on Drugs circa Slave Ambient. Above all is the encyclopaedic knowledge and deft touch producer Tom Iansek of Big Scary and #1 Dads, from the floating snatches of piano to the ethereal emotional quality of Forbes’ lyrics. ‘The Great Unknown’ is the centrepiece of Forbes’ debut EP Future Self, slated for release later this year. Of working with Iansek:

"Tom and I sat down and just jammed out ideas and this one stuck.”

“The song inspired a new perspective on creativity for me, and it helped me tap further into the theme of emotional manipulation that echoes through the track.”

Montaigne, meanwhile, has also gone from strength to strength. Only 19, she has already released her debut EP, the brooding art-pop Life of Montaigne, and received significant Triple J airtime with single ‘I Am Not an End’. Her upcoming tour is all the more exciting for the fledgling nature of both musicians’ careers to date: one feels these shows would be like studying at the University of Queensland with Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, or crashing on the couch of the Angels’ famous Petrie Terrace house.

It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine BANFF continuing this lineage of iconic Brisbane musicians. Two singles in: no pressure at all, Mr Forbes.
