Ayla Releases 'Waiting'

Many people have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up to young Australian singer Ayla’s successful 2014 single ‘Wish I Was’, and now they don’t have to wait much longer. The aptly named song ‘Waiting’ is set to drop on iTunes tomorrow, Friday 8 May, with a video and EP on the way.

At only 19, Ayla has received nationwide and international success. When her single ‘Wish I Was’ hit Triple J it became the most played track by a solo female artist in 2014. After her Australian success, she was signed to Ego Music in Italy, who also have The Jezebels and Emma Louise on their books. Little did she know she would then secure a top 10 single on the Italian iTunes chart.

‘Waiting’ could be seen as beautiful lamentation. Written in the bathroom of an ice skating rink, Ayla looks at feelings of loneliness and isolation, all wrapped up neatly in her own style of indie pop.

“The beginnings of the song 'Waiting' came about when I was at an ice skating rink with a group of friends. It was crowded, yet I still felt alone” Ayla says. “The opening line came into my head and the song developed from there. Song writing is somewhat like keeping a journal for me. I find if you can express the way you’re feeling it helps you to analyse your situation and move forward.”

While the haunting opening line gives you a look into the darker corners the singers’ mind, the track then unfolds into a soaring mix of vivid guitars, tight-knit drums and delicate synths. But it’s Ayla’s commanding voice, pulsing between vulnerability and power, that ultimately defines the track.

So get ready for the single to be released tomorrow. If her last one is anything to go by, she’s set for even bigger success.
