Slum Sociable Reveal Strangely Moving Video For 'Anyway'

Slum Sociable can, for the moment, argue that nothing else like them exists in Australia currently. Although, it would be hard to know, really, because we know so little about Slum Sociable.

They’re a production duo from Mordialloc, nestled in Melbourne’s Sandbelt. They’ve just released a truly mind-melting video for debut single ‘Anyway’, directed by the inimitable Melbourne photographer/ videographer Danny Cohen, responsible for iconic work with Mac Demarco and Chela, among others. They are a little MS MR in their secrecy and rapid rise through to blogosphere. Want to know something else? We think they’ll be bloody huge.

‘Anyway’ has been dubbed a lo-fi washed-out jazz hop mash up of unique quality. The harpsichord, such an irregular sound in popular music, is employed to almost chilling effect. The sight of men draped in coloured cloth gyrating and pulsing to tinny-sounding, distant vocals and a shuffling zombie bass line like a murder (?) of particularly flamboyant Death Eaters is a truly wondrous thing.

There is another ghost behind this duo, and his haunting extends from shore to shore in Australia: Tom Iansek. Yes, the Big Scary, #1 Dads and producer of burgeoning ability seems to have been behind such a staggering proportion of good musical things to have left our shores in the past five years. Though Slum Sociable played their first live gig as a duo at this year’s Sugar Mountain Festival, their support slot for #1 Dads’ July National Tour will be their first proper opportunity to exhibit their musical chops.

Since premiering on music blog The Line of Best Fit, Slum Sociable has simply gone from strength to strength. Pilerats says they’re an act to watch for 2015. I Oh You say their first release was “effortless and dreamlike.” They are already overdue a debut EP through Liberation. Strap yourselves in; it can’t be long now.
