The Five Most Expensive Music Videos Ever

Of all of the music videos ever made, the weird and the wonderful(?), the top five most expensive ever made were created by just two artists.

Madonna and Michael Jackson.

So what do Madge and MJ have in common? Too much money and too much time, perhaps? Both artists are famous for turning their videos into an art form hoping to top themselves with each new project they undertook.

5. Black or White - Michael Jackson

Coming in at a whopping $6.9 million Black and White was the lead single from Jackson’s Dangerous. The final product was an 11-minute adventure which premiered at the same time in 27 countries, with an estimated 500 million people watching.

4. Bedtime Story - Madonna

Costing a cool $7.7 million, Madonna premiered the video at movie theatres in New York City, Chicago, and Santa Monica. These days, it is housed permanently in a collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

3. Die Another Day - Madonna

The James Bond-inspired video set the star back another $7.9 million and was a mixture of green screens and intricate and expensive special effects.

2. Express Yourself - Madonna

She just keeps going. The most expensive of all of Madge's creations tipped the scales at $9.4 million and was the most expensive video ever made when it was released in 1989. The clip was inspired by 1927 German science fiction film Metropolis.

1. Michael & Janet Jackson - Scream

Drum roll please... the most expensive video made to date, taking place on an elaborately-built spaceship set only set the brother sister duo back $10.7 million. The mostly black and white treatment shows Michael and Janet having fun, while simultaneously being angry about how the media had been portraying them and was the first single off Michael’s HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I.
