Artists Come As They Are To Honour Nirvana

It was enough to make a music nerd cry as legends old and new gathered to welcome Nirvana, Kiss and Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Although the accolades were for the boss’s band and Kiss too all eyes were on the Nirvana induction which is taking place on the 20th anniversary of the death of front man Kurt Cobain. A plethora of pop music’s finest were chosen to pay tribute to the iconic Seattle garage band.

Joan Jett was chosen to sing Smells Like Teen Spirit. Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, St. Vincent and Lorde each took turns at the microphone, with Lorde’s version of All Apologies ending the night.

Always controversial, Cobains widow Courtney Love to the stage to some weak booing but took it on the chin to announce how much Cobain would appreciate the honour. A hug from Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl all but squashed the long running feud the remaining band members have had with Love.

The evening was as star studded as an event can get with former R.E.M singer Michael Stipe commenting on Nirvanas ability to rally the disaffected youth of yesteryear.

“Nirvana tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard,”
