Q & A: Dividem

Victorian indie-dance duo Dividem have been on a yearlong high after the release of their self-titled EP and the reception of it’s lead single All In My Head. We fired a few questions at the electronic two-piece in the hope of getting to know them a little better.

How do you guys describe your musical journey so far?

It's definitely been convoluted. We've played together in rock bands and been through other names. So, convoluted! We've been mates for years so it's just been natural to play music together.

What was the best experience through all the years of making music together?

Releasing our “Dividem” EP. We both had pretty hectic 2014 so it felt great to get that EP out.

What were the influences on your EP? What inspired you?

Everything [that’s] bass heavy. For some reason the artwork for one of Nero's songs inspired Fix. Golden features was definitely an influence too.

Who do you look up to most amongst Aussie musicians?

For us RUFUS are just so inspiring. They've got such a good grasp on making poppy dance tunes and translating them into a live show. Retza’s a bit of a production inspiration, he’s got impeccable productions, incredible taste, and is a lovely person. Rob Swire’s another production inspiration, and Gotye and Tim Shiel, who worked with Gotye on his live show, [because they’re] amazing songwriters, musicians, and technicians.

If you could describe your music in three words, what would it be?

House. Techno. Melodic.

What is the best part of live shows in your opinion?

For us on stage its awesome to have that musical connection with your mate. We get a kick out of playing together. For an audience, I guess it's that you're never going to get songs played exactly the same way every time. There are always imperfections and that element of unpredictability.

Is there anyone who you are dying to collaborate with?

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, I just want his voice on a song!

You have teased us with the sneak into The Beat Is My Master, and it feels much darker and deeper than tracks from the EP. Is this where you are planning to go from now on?

Yeah this one is a little different for us and a little darker than where we're headed. We've been playing it live now for ages and it always gets a great response so we thought we might as well put it out. We're currently working on our next EP and it's a lot more melodic and vocal oriented.

It's known that Paddy has a film-making background and it would've been a shame if you didn't put it in use, so are you thinking about adding some visuals to your tunes?

Absolutely! At this stage it's just about finding the time but we're starting to pull some clips together, so yes the plan is to bring visuals into the live show. Visuals and lights! And yes we are looking to do videos for our tracks as well.
