If you thought Katie Noonan’s evocative vocals couldn’t be more haunting…think again.
In their Queensland debut tonight at QPAC, Noonan joins forces with internationally renowned Brisbane-based company Circa to create Love-Song-Circus; a spellbinding performance based on the stories and letters of Australia’s first convict women.
Blending Noonan’s flawless vocals with folk instrumentation, a string quartet and three acrobats moving rhythmically around them, the captivating performance is a powerful ode to the strength and endurance of the first women of Australia; a story previously untold.
In a recent interview with AAA Backstage, Noonan described her passion for the project.
“I do feel a particular sense of responsibility with this show; I feel these are important stories to be told,” she said.
“I’ve found these women incredibly inspiring, and I’m sure other people will too…Combined with Circa, who are such an inspiring bunch of people, it’s a really nice mixture of two worlds.”
Noonan’s journey with these convict women first began after seeing an exhibition at the National Museum called Love Tokens. She was inspired by coins inscribed by convicts for their loved ones and sought to discover their stories.
The Brisbane premiere follows glowing reviews from festivals in both Adelaide and Melbourne.
“Impossibly beautiful. This show is a gift to our contemporary Australian culture. Pure and tragic, brutal and transcending!”
