Queen Street Sunday: Avaberée

Good things come in threes; this is no truer than with Avaberée, a ‘harmony infused folk’ trio from Brisbane. Consisting of Irena, Geneieve and Aimee, these lovely ladies have been playing in and around Brisbane for the last few years. Chances are you have already seen them play at some time, maybe without even realising it.

Today however, they are playing to the Queen Street Mall, making this Sunday afternoon a little bit brighter for a lot of fortunate pedestrians. The exquisite harmonies from these ladies stop a lot of shoppers, enjoying the show for a while, before returning to their retail therapy. The set is a mix of originals and covers, but they have put their own touch to each of these covers so that they are barely recognisable from the original song. Their rendition of the Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal song ‘Dance Wiv Me’ is a crowd pleaser that brings more than a few smiles to the assembled audience. I particularly enjoyed their original song ‘Pretending’ which had a sweet middle section where the girls each sang a different line, in unison. The result is a complex and rich harmony where the words ‘I Love You’ jump out at the listener, it is something to behold and must have been a pain to rehearse.

Avaberée play three 30-minute sets, each bringing a new crowd as well as a few die-hard fans that hang around for all 3 sets. Judging by the number of cameras out, either taking photos or filming the performance, I’d say these ladies definitely have a winning look and sound. If you can imagine the female supergroup Seeker Lover Keeper, but without the pretentiousness and awkward stage presence, then you would be halfway to realising the talent that Avaberée possess. Sadly, they had sold out of their debut EP, but they assured me they would be in the studio soon to record a follow-up that would see the light of day sometime in the New Year.

Avaberée will be playing at the Spiegel Tent as part of the Brisbane Festival, in September, check the program for details. Be sure to keep up to date by following them on Facebook and you can check out their YouTube channel as well.
