Indie-Dance Act Rufus Announce 'Atlas' Tour
On the eve of the release their much anticipated debut album ATLAS, Sydney trio, RÜFÜS announce a national headline tour with support from YesYou (East Coast) and Motez (SA/WA).
An atlas can be described as a book of maps and charts. Greek Mythology would tell us that Atlas was the titan who held the sky on his shoulders and was turned to stone by a snake laden monster/queen.
You were (are) right, although by definition from Sydney trio RUFUS, Atlas would be a sun dream, fused together by warm honey days and pop-cool electric nights, creating a progressive hypnotic hedonist that is their 1# Debut 2013 Album, and the belly of their National tour ‘You Were Right’!
The Tivoli was at sold out capacity. Police outside were pacing the streets waiting for any loose change to stumble their way. While inside, it was an Eftpos and ATM-less pool of anticipation, electricity and a whole lot of thirsty and eager dance fans.
Opening with breezy beat single ‘Sundream’, the introduction was enough to see the crowds’ attention completely captivated, and in no time, devour the synthy summer anthem, resulting in dance. Just so much dance. Working their way through the album, the trio make master of their instruments, with vocalist Tyrone layering his glazy soulful vocals and percussive synth to deliver ‘Modest Life’ and energetic ‘Rendezvous’, but it was the next instrumental track (of a name I can’t recall) that really showcased Tyrone’s DJ skills and the trios less pop and impressive progressive electronic limbs, allowing the crowd to have a quick breather, to re-shuffle and mentally re-group for what we all could feel was looming ahead..
Appearing like an oasis, ‘Desert Night’s haunting percussive beginning seemed to throw the crowds cogs into over drive and the synergy is flowing. When girls start popping up on shoulders in a closed venue and no one says a damn thing, you know that something bigger is at play. RUFUS, radiating purple, yellow and orange lights confiscate our ability to control, and seemingly has taken captive of every soul in the room, tugging, pulling and breathing new life!
From here on it’s pretty much a rich electro power house of fist pumping and dance, after a brief chat with the audience, RUFUS stay chivalrous and commit to what they started. Punching out recent single ‘You Were Right’ and ‘Like An Animal’.
It was no surprise that ‘Take Me’ had to close the show, and it did just that. With the lapping waves and breathy fading falsetto, ‘Take Me’ built to tidal wave strength, to have the surging mass linger while an epic drum solo is absolutely massacred, finishing off what started with sweet Sun dreams across the desert, to rendezvous like an animal, and ultimately crashing down on the dripping crowd, surrendered and chanting “take me”!
A fantastic start to what’s shaping up to be a stellar tour for RUFUS, they have definitely made a sound that is totally their own, explorers and connoisseurs of tight electronic, deep bass groove dance heavy pop, big things are on the horizon! …or I could just be dehydrated?
