Single Review: Stillwater Giants' Patience

Stillwater Giants are back with new single Patience, which is the first slice of their upcoming debut LP ‘Munich’, due out soon.

It’s been a while since the Perth band has released any new material, with Stillwater Giants taking a break in 2013. It was in 2012 when Stillwater Giants were propelled in to the spotlight with their single Fly Under The Radar and a triple j Unearthed spot on the Groovin’ The Moo line-up. This success snowballed and saw them in support slots for the likes of Regurgitator, The Delta Riggs, Stonefield, Ball Park Music, The Rubens and British India.

After playing a host of shows in 2014, which included BIGSOUND, Groovin’ The Moo (again) and WAM Festival, as well as heading to the US for a spot on the bill of tastemaker festival CMJ. They even have the distinct honour of being the first band ever to perform at the brand new Perth Arena when it opened.

While it has been some time since Stillwater Giants have recorded any new songs, Patience is a return to from after their prolonged hiatus. The first single off their forthcoming debut LP ‘Munich’, this song was recorded live at RADA studios under the helm of producer Matt Gio, whose previous credits include Birds Of Tokyo, Katy Steele and San Cisco.

The song bursts to life with youthful exuberance, and is a driving song that has excellent indie-rock vibes, with some surf rock and Brit-pop overtones for good measure. It is loaded with catchy hooks, and with lyrics like “Let’s go/I’ve got no patience” it seems clear that Stillwater Giants don’t want to be still and stuck in one place for very long.

Underneath all the rollicking guitar strumming and groovy breakdowns is a song that reflects the time and energy gone in to the last two years. The results of the break are evident with the band displaying a step forward not only in their sound, but also in their maturity in composing and song writing.

This is an undoubtedly a catchy summer tune, and something that will get feet tapping from the first bar. Now the challenge is to show some patience in waiting for the release of ‘Munich’, which is set to drop tantalisingly soon.
