Live Review: The Antlers @ The Brightside 11/02/2015

On Wednesday night, while most of Brisbane was distracted by the One Direction concert, Brooklyn rockers The Antlers graced the stage of The Brightside in Brisbane for the first time in three years. The band absolutely killed it with their stately tempos, surging choruses, and crushing falsetto. It was refreshing to see a rock band dominated by keyboards and horns deliver earthshaking guitar sections in a balanced and harmonious fashion.

Although The Antlers have created some truly beautiful records, their music just makes sense live. They have come so far in the last few years that their live performance actually sounded fuller and more stimulant than the recording. Everything was working for them this night. The Brightside was the perfect venue, as the band’s immense sound filled the room in perfect harmony so that no matter where you were standing you were drunk on the fumes of their overwhelming sound, and the angsty atmospherics were more euphoric in contrast to the more distinct and edgy vocals.

Although Silbernman’s idea of crowd hype involved him gently telling us about their day between songs, the band did seem genuinely humbled to be back in Australia and in turn made us even more thrilled to see them. As they closed their set with crowd favourite “Putting the Dog to Sleep”, everyone stumbled away from the stage in an intoxicated state of euphoria, bonded by our shared experience and admiration of this unique and timeless act.
