Single Review: 'The End' The Jezabels

Jezabels

The Jezabels’ 2011 debut LP, Prisoner, is a hard act to follow. Winning ARIA, AIR and AMP awards, the album was certified gold in Australia and peaked at number two on the Australia ARIA album charts. Thankfully, the first peek of the band’s 2014 sophomore release, The End, is a confirmation of a band all-too deserving of this success.

Recorded in London with producer Dan Grech-Marguerat (Moby, Scissor Sisters, Lana Del Rey), The End showcases all the things that The Jezabels do well. A solid, catchy piece of song writing, it features Nik Kaloper’s metronome-like drumming and Samuel Lockwood and Heather Shannon’s harmonic wall of guitar and synths. Hayley Mary’s vocals are of particular note in this track; having withstood the months of touring following Prisoner’s release, her voice soars through the chorus, highlighting the vocal power that fans have come to expect.

However, showcasing what the band does best is the cause of The End’s only issue. In the vein of tracks like Endless Summer (off the Prisoner LP), it feels like a song we’ve heard before, with little invention or signs of the band exploring new territories in their music. Still, this is only the first cut from their forthcoming album, and in no way a sign that we should be disappointed with what’s to come.

The Jezabels might be asking ‘is this the end?’, but fortunately, The Jezabels are far from the end of their career, joining Depeche Mode for a run of UK shows this November and playing all dates of St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival in early 2014.

The Jezabels untitled second album is due in store early 2014, independently through MGM Distribution.
