Live Review: Sticky Fingers @ The Zoo, Brisbane 18.04.2013

sticky-fingers

I’m sitting here at my computer (nursing one hell of a hangover) and attempting to write a review of Sticky Fingers gig last night at The Zoo, but I feel like a stuttering toddler. I am stuck and cannot get past the the lamest adjectives… Cool. And. Fun.

While this sounds so utterly simplistic I mean it in the most literal terms. The band last night was the definition of ‘cool’ and the show was ridiculously ‘fun’! What you want from a live show these days is to be able to dance like a mad man and really let go and Sticky Finger’s sound (consisting of garage pop, psychedelic reggae and dub grooves) really allowed for this. The boys had so much energy and literally had everybody dancing from the get-go, it was infectious. I could not have had more fun at this show. Everyone had a drink in their hand but we were more intoxicated by the music. Its gigs like this that renew your faith in the every changing industry and keep you coming back for more. They put on genuine performance that you would expect from full blown professionals and perhaps not a Sydney band that has only been in the game for a few years!

Now I’m not going to lie, I was a couple of drinks in when Sticky Fingers took to the stage but I can clearly remember the crowd’s frenzied reaction as the band members walked out. Front man and lead vocalist, Dylan Frost ran onstage bare chested with a grungy sleeveless denim jacket, matching denim bucket hat and a crazed look in his eye. While this may sound like a hard look to pull off, he could not have looked cooler (here we are again pulling out the most imaginative adjectives) and was surprisingly sexy? I specifically remember a girl standing next to me saying, “Did it just get hot in here?!” and I remember thinking, “Wow, I want to judge you right now but I weirdly agree with you...” C’mon who doesn’t love a little denim on denim?

Moving on… I’m going to let you in on one of my favourite guilty pleasures; eavesdropping on everyone’s conversations just as the show has ended and the crowds are finding their way to the exists in a haze of wonder. Last night was a doozey. I heard comments of the stoner variety, “wow man, just wow”, many of high praise, “that was so sick!” and “possibly one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen” to my personal favourite, “do you think Grill’d is open?”

Sticky Fingers have produced some epic tracks and created some unique music videos, but it is true that the band is one hundred per cent in their element on stage. If you haven’t seen them live yet, you really must! I can honestly say that while I’ve never been the biggest fan of reggae I loved this band’s sound and it was physically impossible to not dance at their gig last night. The boys are forging their own genre of music that although may not be classically Australian, has an iconic Aussie sound similar to successful and innovative local bands like Cat Empire, proving that these boys are ones to watch! After that rambling review all I have left to say is Sticky Fingers live performance at The Zoo last night was utterly cool and err, fun. Ah, I need a drink!
