Not many people would have seen this coming.
Gideon Bensen of The Preatures has started a new solo project, with an EP to be released through his own record label Puncture Records as well as a few headline solo shows.
His debut single All New Low, which was produced by Tony Buchen (Montaigne, Mansionair) and Bensen, premiered on triple j and is out now, with the forthcoming EP due in February of 2016.
The single sees Bensen embrace a more electronic sound, and is indicative of what to expect from the rest of the solo EP, which is a departure from the rock and blues sounds of The Preatures.
The idea for Bensen’s solo project came while on tour with The Preatures, where he found himself constantly working on tracks in any spare time he could find. Wanting to push himself, Bensen contacted friend and producer Buchen with the idea for an 80s/90s/new wave/soul album.
While recording All New Low Bensen was heavily influenced by hip hop and beat making through acts like N.W.A, Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus.
Calling upon friends Megan Washington for backing vocals, Jack Moffitt (The Preatures) on guitar and Carlos Adura (The Tambourine Girls) on drums the single was mixed by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, The Faint) and mastered by Leon Zervos (Wu Tang Clan, Beastie Boys).
To support this new project, Bensen will be playing one off shows in Melbourne and Sydney in February of next year, ahead of the release of the EP.
