David Bowie, one of the world’s greatest songwriters and entertainers, has passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer.
The devastating news was announced in a statement on Bowie’s official Facebook page:
“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief”.
His death comes only two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his latest studio album “Blackstar”.
With a career spanning over 40 years and more than two-dozen studio albums David Bowie was an international pop-icon in every sense.
Many attribute his breakthrough and eventual stardom to his 1972 album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars” and its kooky space-suited character, Ziggy Stardust.
His music spans generations and includes timeless classics Young Americans, Modern Love, Fame, Space Oddity, and Heroes.
He also sung with the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger on the 1985 cover of Martha and the Vandellas’ Dancing In The Street, with the song’s music video considered one of the greatest/silliest music videos ever made.
The British superstar also had a starring role in several movies including the cult classic “Labyrinth” in 1986 along with performances in 1976’s “The Man Who Fell To Earth” and 1983’s “The Hunger”.
Bowie kept a low profile after undergoing heart surgery in 2004, with his last live performance in aid of a New York charity in 2006.
