Sing The Blues Away Charity Show

Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide and in Australia it is estimated that 45 percent of people will experience a mental health condition at one point of their life. However, it the stigma and little awareness in communities that often stop people from ever receiving the help they need. Brisbane locals Jessi Hannaway, co-founder of ‘The Sad Girls Club’ and events management student Libby Anger, have teamed up together to put together a charity show dubbed ‘Sing The Blues Away’ that will have all proceeds raised being donated to Beyond Blue.

"The ‘Sad Girls Club’ was sort of an inside joke, about how we’re all having a real rough time we’re basically the sad girls club let’s make shirts” Hannaway explains about how the Sad Girls Club came into fruition.  “And then once we did do that, all these people were coming to us saying where do I get one I really want one”

Once this started to happen the girls changed their direction for the shirts and began to sell them on a non for profit basis with all proceeds going to beyond blue.

How the ‘Sing The Blues Away’ event came together is another story, with Anger having to put together an event for an assignment that saw her team up with Hannaway to create something they never intended would happen.

“The idea was originally to be a barbeque in new farm with some bands do acoustics sets, but in the end it made more sense to just go and do an acoustic show at a venue that was offered to us” Hannaway explains but as Anger added due to food licensing the idea was quickly deserted.

In the end all it took was a simple Facebook status from Hannaway stating that they wanted to put on an event for Beyond Blue for the pair to get completely inundated with support from bands, business and even a venue to host the event for free.

“Many of the bands that approached us said they’d wanted to do a benefit for Beyond Blue for a while and definitely wanted to be a part of this” Hannaway said.

The ‘Sing The Blues Away’ show takes place this Sunday the 18th of October, and thanks to the New Globe Theatre for offering them a venue free of charge, and so many bands approaching them, the pair now have back to back music all afternoon with only ten minute change over between each set.

The door price is $10 and will all be donated directly to Beyond Blue, however if you can’t come along a donation page has been set up. The afternoon will also feature giveaways from 24hundred, Death Before Decaf Sacred Skin Tattoo Old Shave Way, Shinko Tattoo and DVNY Clothing.
