Childish Gambino Gets Booed At Newcastle

Rapper Childish Gambino (the stage name for Community star Donald Glover) has left punters unhappy and demanding their money back at a Listen Out sideshow in Newcastle after he was booed off stage.

According to The Newcastle Herald, the gig was one of the most anticipated nights in the Hunter Valley, and was a sell-out.

However things didn’t go to plan. The gig, that was advertised as a live performance, apparently consisted of Gambino spending around 40 minutes on stage in a dark corner behind a laptop playing songs in a “mixtape” performance while his crew worked the crowd, before Gambino performed a brief freestyle.

As Gambino and his crew left the stage the disgruntled patrons let their feelings known, booing him offstage and chanting obscenities.

It was reported that the rapper was visibly shocked by the crowd response. If that's the case, he shouldn’t venture on to Twitter or Facebook, where concert goers blasted the show as “atrocious karaoke”, “the worst gig I’ve ever been to”, and “a massive middle finger to Newcastle”.

Neither the venue, The Cambridge Hotel, or the promoters of the show, Big Apachee, have commented on the gig, and no mention of it was made on triple j’s Like A Version featuring Gambino, though he has cancelled his Listen Out sideshow in Canberra, citing the busy touring schedule taking its toll.

Childish Gambino is scheduled to appear at the Listen Out festivals in Sydney and Brisbane over the weekend, let’s hope those gigs go a little better.
