Barenaked Ladies to Release 14th Studio Album of Delectable Dad-Rock

It has been considerable longer than 'one week' since Barenaked Ladies reached the apex of their career, in those heady days of 1998 and the release of Stunt. However, BnL are still a force to be reckoned with, and to show it they are releasing 14th studio album, Pinball.

My, aren't they different from the loveable eccentrics strutting around like roosters in ill-fitting suit jackets and occasionally getting arrested for cocaine possession (the main culprit, Steven Page, left the band in 2009). In their defence, though, crooked Canadian eccentricity was a lot more acceptable in the 90's, and the 2015 version of BnL is a lot more adult-contemporary lounge rock.

That's definitely not a criticism. The harmonising on lead single "Say What You Want" is arguably stronger than anything they produced in their prime. Though there certainly isn't anything innovative about the song, it's nevertheless pleasing to hear a basic rock progression laid over nodding percussion and the faintest hints of Canadian accent. The accompanying video highlights the band's love of iconic arcade game pinball, a recurring theme of Silverball.

Lead singer Ed Robertson says Silverball was the band's first album since debut Gordon that hasn't featured some sort of creeping insecurity about their songs. It almost sounds incredulous, given the 14 million albums sold worldwide by the band and the dozens of Juno Awards on their mantlepieces, but it highlights how difficult it is to keep making music over the course of over two decades.

Silverball will be released in Australia on the 29th of May digitally and the 6th of June on CD or vinyl.
