Neil Young To Unveil PonoPlayer at SXSW

PonoPlayer

Restoring the soul of music, it’s a big call, but if any one can do it, it’s Neil Young.

Set to be unveiled later today at SXSW, Young introduces the PonoPlayer, a high-quality digital music player and accompanying music service, PonoMusic to bring digital music to discerning fans.

The device holds 128GB of memory, or enough to store about 100-500 high-resolution digital music albums depending on the resolution and hopes to transcend the limitations of playback from a multi-function smart phone.

The brainchild of Young, and a passion project in the works for quite some time, he describes the latest release as a breakthrough.

“It’s about the music, real music. We want to move digital music into the 21st century and PonoMusic does that,” he said.

“We couldn’t be more excited – not for ourselves, but for those that are moved by what music means in their lives.”

The PonoPlayer is purpose built in collaboration with Ayre Acoustics, designed and engineered to allow consumers to experience studio master-quality digital music the way the artist recorded it, with no compromise.

An iTunes-esque platform accompanies the device, PonoMusic.com, and provides finest quality, highest resolution digital music from both major labels and prominent independent labels as well as endorsed ear bud and head phone products.

Customers are able to download, manage and sync their music to their PonoPlayer and other high-resolution digital devices, with memory cards available for additional music collections.

In a statement on their website, the Pono team have high hopes for the device, calling it a ‘time machine’ that takes you back to the live gig.

“Miraculously, there's a wealth of music & soul (or if you must, "data") trapped on millions of recordings made over the last half century, that we're hoping to unleash for the very first time,” they said.

The device goes on discounted pre-sale for $399 on March 12 via Kickstarter.
