Apple In Discussions About Streaming Service
In their quest to be ultimate masters and overlords of the universe, there are reports that Apple are to launch a Spotify rival music streaming service.
With the intent of finding and awarding upcoming local acts, Spotify have launched their latest Emerge program in Australia and New Zealand.
Emerge uses technology that picks up on music trends (with Spotify’s streaming and sharing data) to determine who will become the ‘next big thing’. Prior to them reaching global success, artists such as Lorde, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (2012 winners) and Alt-J have all been included in the program.
Ten Australian and New Zealand acts have been shortlisted in the search for the 2014 winner: house music duo The Aston Shuffle, Dew Process’ newest signing MT, Christchurch alt-popster Tom Lark, Sydney indie outfit Gang of Youths, pop duo Max & Bianca, Sydney-based rapper Miracle, singer-songwriter Gossling, hip hop artist and producer Chance Waters, dance outfit The Acid and South Auckland’s Smashproof.
With the artists competing with each other on the Emerge website, Spotify will choose a winner on April 27 based on user listens, stars and social media shares. Teaming up with HP, the top prize includes a Spotify Session, $5000 worth of HP technology and a Spotify promotional package for a future release.
Rene Chambers, Spotify label and artist relations manager, expressed the platform’s excitement about the program’s Australia and New Zealand launch; “We’re thrilled to be bringing Spotify’s Emerge program to Australia and New Zealand, especially at a time where music from the region is garnering global recognition. We hope to ultimately help discover and surface the next big thing by using Spotify’s unique access to data, technology, as well as people-power.”
