Around this time last year, Vance Joy was looking forward to the release of his debut EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing. Just one wonderful, whirlwind year on, and Vance has claimed the #1 spot on triple J’s Hottest 100 for 2013 and landed in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart with ‘Riptide’.
Since it was added to BBC Radio 1 in December last year, ‘Riptide’ has steadily shot to the upper echelons of the UK Chart. This week it achieved its highest position yet.
2013 was a phenomenal year for Vance Joy. His EP, God Loves You When You’re Dancing secured gold accreditation, ‘Riptide’ worked its way into the hearts and minds of the nation, climbing to the Top 10 of the ARIA Singles Chart and achieving triple platinum status. ARIA crowned it the Highest Selling Australian Single for the year and the #10 Most Streamed Track overall. It was the #2 Most Played Australian Song at radio (#10 overall). 2013 also saw Vance win two AIR Awards locally, receive four ARIA nominations, feature on Spotify and Shazam’s Artists to Watch lists for 2014 and perform sold out national and international tours. Notably, the last Australian artist to appear on a Shazam Artists to Watch list was Gotye for ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’.
2014 is shaping up to be even more momentous. First, an incredible Hottest 100 result. Now, growing success in the UK with a Top 10 single for ‘Riptide’ and the glory of ‘Song of the Year’ from BBC Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton. Similarly, there’s a rapidly building story in the US, where Vance was named an ‘Artist To Watch’ by Time Magazine and Riptide has broken the Top 20 of the AAA Chart and will feature as iTunes Single of the Week from January 28.
The coming weeks will see Vance continue on his globetrotting, world-beating way, performing at this year’s Laneway Festival, embarking on sold-out UK and European shows, and touring the US and Canada with Young The Giant, in conjunction with dates at SXSW.
Vance Joy’s debut album is due for release in the second half of 2014.
