In a few short years, Cut Copy have grown from a bedroom project to an international festival staple that never fails to leave thousands enraptured. Their vision is clearer than ever before on their fourth album, Free Your Mind, due out Friday 1 November on Modular Recordings.
The follow-up to the Grammy-nominated and ARIA Award-winning Zonoscope was recorded in the band’s hometown of Melbourne, and produced by Cut Copy frontman Dan Whitford. The band then decamped to upstate New York, where mixer Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT, The Flaming Lips) added extra sonic wizardry.
The record was strongly influenced by the two “Summers of Love,” which were birthed from burdening times – Vietnam and 10 years of Thatcher’s reign – though they were one hell of a party. Through unprecedented explosions of youth culture, communal elation and celebration, these eras provided a spirit that the band embraced – the need to tear down the walls of perception while creating a fantasy of what the next youth revolution might sound like.
Whitford explains, “The concept of freedom is one that's universally positive and timeless, and whatever each person's version of that freedom is, it's a good thing to be reminding ourselves to be free.”
With that spirit in mind, the band have been releasing early music in unusual ways, cutting the grooves of album track Let Me Show You Love into 120 bespoke dubplates for a lucky few who were at the right place at the right time.
The experiment gave random YouTube user debaser22 the keys to share the experience with fans all over, uploading a crude document of his first listen - check it out here.
For the album’s title track, 6 billboards were placed around the world (In Australia, the UK, Chile, Mexico City, Detroit and the California Desert),and anyone who traveled to one of these billboards could listen to the song via their smart phone on the band’s website. See the story here, plus videos of the billboards together on the band’s website.
