Q & A: The Walking Who

Sydneysiders The Walking Who have hit the nail on the head with their latest album “Lewiside”. We threw a bunch of questions at the psych-rock group about recording the album and their general shenanigans.

Was there ever a point during the making of “Lewiside” that the band considered giving it all up?

Yeah totally, all the time. The band for all of us is the biggest cause of stress in our lives. Things always take longer, more energy, more money, more of yourself than you always thought they would. I guess that is the cost of trying create something cool. In saying that, you only need to step back and take stock to realise the band is also by far the best thing that we have. It has shown us the best of times and given a lot. We’ll be sticking by her for a while yet.

Who is the album an apology to and why?

We apologize to the bands we borrowed gear from and forgot to return. We apologize to our families for missing the birthdays. We apologize to our neighbors who we kept from sleeping. We apologize to the owners of the studios where we forgot to arm the security system. We apologize to our day jobs for calling in sick. We apologize to our girlfriends for coming home tired and stroppy. We apologize to the people who like our music and waited too long.

Now that the album’s out, what’s the feeling like in the band heading into 2016 and are there any tour plans/festival spots?

SMAC Fest on the 10th of January will be our first date back. After that we have a tour in the works.

What was the craziest/most surprising experience you had whilst recording in Iceland?

We had been in Iceland for two weeks already and still hadn’t seen the aurora borealis. We recorded I think the last night of our stay in Iceland. We had finished tracking late and were leaving the studio to head home. As we walked outside, up above, there they were. Such a wonderful moment to share with the dudes

How many cars has Jay bought since the album’s been released?

Just three I believe. He doesn’t like to talk about it though.

Do you think “Lewiside” is best heard whilst road tripping with mates or chilling with a cold beer on the beach?

Oh in the car for sure. Even better in the loo with some scented candles doing a poop I’d say.

Who/What has been the biggest influences on the “Lewiside” sound?

Because it was recorded over such a long period of time the influences at the beginning we probably don’t listen to at all now. Kurt Vile, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Neil Young more toward the beginning of the process then later more Knife, Suicide and Shining Bird vibes.

Finally, what’s the worst Christmas present you’ve ever received?

My grandma bought me 4 wooden blocks spelling PAUL once. Cheers nan!
