Q&A: Melinda Kirwin 'Falls'

After a tumultuous few years of writing, performing, breaking up and making up, acclaimed Aussie duo 'Falls' are gearing up to release their debut album Omaha this Spring. Get to know the hauntingly beautiful duo a little more before the release..

Hey guys! How did you meet and how did Falls come about?

We met when we were both studying music at the Conservatorium in Sydney. We never actually planned on writing together, but we lived in a big share house with a bunch of other musicians and one of us would be working on a song , and the other would chime in with an idea. Pretty soon we had a whole bunch of songs that were a bit of both of us.

Describe your sound in 1 sentence.

Raw, honest indie folk.

Has your changing relationship shaped Falls?

It has certainly shaped our songs... our debut EP really was the story of ‘us’, but now our muses are changing and evolving.

Do you find you are most productive during emotional periods of your lives?

Absolutely! I joke that we’d have nothing to write about if we were happy and content.

Who is your greatest musical inspiration?

That is a tough one....but I think The Beatles would be our greatest inspiration.

Is song writing a collaborative effort?

Yes! Every song is a little bit of both of us.

How did your time in the US effect your song writing?

You can hear the influence of the United States on almost every song on the record as we were very inspired by the music, landscapes and the people of this beautiful country. There is also an undercurrent of longing that flows throughout the record due in part I think to the loves we lost and people we left behind when making such a big move.

How are you feeling in the lead up to the release of ‘Omaha’?

We are feeling a little excited and a little terrified all at once. We are so excited for people to hear these songs, but it is always a little scary laying yourself bare like that.

The first single from the album ‘Let In The Light' is a beautiful but haunting track. What’s the story behind it?

'Let in the Light' is the first song on the album, and it is also one of the first songs we wrote when we first moved to America and the reality of what we had done had begun to set in... It is a very personal song, and while it is about the sadness and insecurities that can plague all of us, and the ways we often hide this from those around us, fake the smiles and carry on....ultimately it’s about finding hope even in those darkest of times.

You’ve spent quite a bit of time in the US, do you feel like you’ve “cracked” the US market?

It’s still early days for this little band and we have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we are grabbing this opportunity with both hands and are keen to show these Americans what we’re made of. I wouldn’t say we’ve cracked it yet, but we’ve made a little dent.

You’ve toured with a lot of great Australian artists, like Matt Corby and Vance Joy. What would be your dream band/artist to tour with?

Father John Misty

What was the one Australian treat you missed the most during your time in the US?

Salt & Vinegar chips!!!

'Omaho', the debut album from the duo is due out on October 2nd. Until then, you can check out their new single 'Let In The Light' below.
