Our Interview with Imogen Harper.

Our very own Alice Gomes sat down with songstress Imogen Harper to talk about her EP Charcoal Heart. It turns out she has a sweet tooth to go with her sweet voice.

Alice Gomes

Hi Imogen, how are you?

Imogen Harper

I'm great thanks, how are you?

Alice Gomes

I'm very thankful for the opportunity to chat with you. I'm really overwhelmed by everything I read about you, and more importantly, your music! You have a really great voice!

Imogen Harper

Thank you! It is all very exciting at the moment.

Alice Gomes

After all the information I could gather about you, there is something that I kept wondering about, and I believe your fans do to. Your lyrics are very profound. What were your thoughts composing 'Charcoal Heart'?

Imogen Harper

Gosh, it's hard to know my exact thoughts.. it’s always such a scramble! Charcoal Heart is a love song but also an observation on relationships... Charcoal is obviously black, but there is a lot of beauty associated with it because it is used in creating art. We all know love can be dark and beautiful!

Alice Gomes

I've heard a great deal of folk singers but still, you stand out from the crowd with your voice. The steady keys you produce are outstanding. Do you exercise your voice? Is it training or is it a gift?

Imogen Harper

I think it has to be both. I've had quite a lot of training over the years, i studied singing at the Australian Institute of Music which definitely improved my voice. I do sing all the time, whether it be with the band, my own songs or those amazing b-grade 80's hits we pretend not to know.

Alice Gomes

Besides having such a strong/sweet voice, you're also a very attractive woman. Does it concern you that some people may misjudge your work?

Imogen Harper

Not really. there will always be people that like/don't like/misjudge your work and you can choose whether to take notice of it. If it becomes too much, i can always go for the Daft Punk image.

Alice Gomes

Good one!
Well, you're only 21! I have to say that it was a big surprise when I learned that, and also that your debut was at age 15. Why did you start playing so early? Was it your individual choice or did you have some influence from friends or family?

Imogen Harper

I had a wonderful singing teacher who encouraged me to perform at that age. I was absolutely terrified but it was such a rewarding and eye opening experience. I still get very nervous!

Alice Gomes

Before I reach my last question: How do you define Imogen Harper? Who is the girl behind the blue eyes?

Imogen Harper

Very complex! I still don't understand myself half the time. but i could be safe in saying determined, sensitive (like ALL musicians) and happy. with a little bit of darkness tucked away in there.

Alice Gomes

This is a question that I like asking all my interviewees: Some musicians never actually stop writing/composing. You’ve got the sold out debut and anchor by the crowd but, are you already working on something new, or do you like to take a break after each new work?

Imogen Harper

Always working on something new.. whether it forms into a recording or a CD, who knows. I do get a huge adrenalin rush performing new songs at gigs though. I might launch a single before the end of the year!

Alice Gomes

Wrapping up: There are millions different reasons for singing, strumming a guitar, writing lyrics, composing, going up the stage, performing... what do you play for?

Imogen Harper

Most of all i think it's for the lyrics. The musicians i love listening to most in the world are also wonderful poets... like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. All the other things like singing and melodies just highlight and add to the beauty and story of the words.

Alice Gomes

Imogen, thank you so much for your time. I’d like to say that I really enjoyed your tunes and you’re already in my ‘Favorites’ playlist!
I wish you the best of luck in the future and I hope we still hear a lot about and from you. It was a pleasure to talk to you and to write about your work.

Imogen Harper

It was lovely chatting to you too Alice. Thank you.

Alice Gomes

Out of curiosity: Do you like Ferrero Rocher (the chocolate)?

Imogen Harper

ABSOLUTELY! A little obsessed perhaps, haha.
