Interview with Illy - Hip Hop Artist

The anticipation for Illy’s second album, The Chase, continues to grow with the announcement that Triple J has selected it as next week’s ‘Feature Album’. Tune in to Triple J all week for your chance to hear more from The Chase! The album’s first single, 'It Can Wait (feat. Owl Eyes)', was the 3rd and 4th most played track on Triple J for the last two weeks respectively.

This week AAA's Lui goes backstage with Illy and talks about the upcoming album, touring and The Pyramid Rock festival.

1. What artist inspired you to become a hip hop artist

The first hiphop I got into was through my older cousins, west coast gangsta rap. I think Tupac was probably the first rapper I tried to emulate, because all the gangsta shit was often tempered by really deep tracks. Although very commercial, a very versatile hiphop artist who said a lot of important things.

2. You are releasing your 2nd album "the Chase" how does this album differ to your debut album "Long Story Short"

Its just a much more solid release. Everything has been worked on harder - production/song structure/lyrics/songwriting. I'm very proud of it.

3. Where did you record the new album "the chase"  and who did you work with?

I recorded it at my big brother j-skubs studio. We did ALL the vocals that are on the album in 3 days, no lie!! I worked with skub, M-Phazes, Ta-Ku, Styalz Fuego and JSquared for production, and Owl Eyes, Wren, Hue Blanes, Olivier Daysoul and the mighty Joyride lent their vocals.

4. It has just been announced that "the chase" will be triple J's album of the week next week, how has the support from triple j  helped your career?

Hugely. Being a triple j listener for years, its unbelievable to actually be getting the kind of support iv got from them. Last years hottest 100 was a trip - wev had an aus day hottest 100 party for years, so to actually be in the countdown was a really satisfying thing for me.

5. You have just been added to the Pyramid Rock Festival line-up, what does playing Pyramid mean to you personally and what sort of  show can we expect?

Personally, its a big deal. Iv been there a few times as a punter, and its always a lot of fun. A lot of my mates are going so its going to be much the same as previous times except I'll get to have a shower and a decent toilet haaha. As for the show, its going to be epic!!!

6. What do you like to do in your spare time away from music?

To be honest there hasn't been that much spare time lately, but just hanging out with mates, playstation, and travelling are how I spend my downtime.

8. As a Melbournite , what footy team do you barrack for?

The mighty Demons!! Its been a tough 25 years, but I think we're about to become a force - flag within 3 years!

9. What can we expect from Illy in 2011 and beyond?

More touring, and more music. No signs of slowing down in the foreseeable future!
