We Interview Laneous and the Family Yah
Mr Laneous took some time with AAA to have a chat regarding their second Pink Dove 2 show @ the Ice Cream Factory in Brisbane's West End Friday 20th April.
So whose brainchild was the Pink Dove Show initially? How exactly did the idea come about?
Positive Serpent (our bass player) once had a dream where we were releasing an album, and at the launch before we played Shirley Temple came out like a flower girl at a wedding throwing flower petals on to the audience out of a basket. At one point the air was filled with petals and when they settled, in the place of Shirley was me. At the end of the show I reached into the same basket and threw a bunch of petals in the air, but this time when they settled, in my place was a lone pink dove hovering there. The dove then flew to the back of the room and out the door and when the audience turned to follow it, magically I was at the door way ready to individually thank everyone as they left.
What inspired you to make an event like this?
We were releasing one of our albums and we wanted to make it special. Getting a young Shirley Temple was out of the question, and having me turn into a pink dove would be difficult with our budget, not to mention the serious ramifications involved with spray painting birds. But still we wanted to avoid putting on an ordinary 3 band line up at the usual venues. So the dream was to do it in an unusual venue, ie a warehouse, and to have an unusual line up, ie more bands that are unique and also acts that are not bands at all.
Would you say there is a lack of events/people/ideas out there like the Pink Dove Show that are not happening, who are not being active enough, that are not getting brought to fruition?
I think like every city there's a fair amount of things going on, you just have to find it. But when it comes to events like Pink Dove in Brisbane particularly, there is a lack because it’s hard to find the right venue.
Being a local Brisbane band, how important is it to perform in Brisbane, and showcase other local bands?
It's important to perform in Bris because it's fun to put on a gig at home, lots of friends come, after parties are easier to find etc. As for show casing local bands, it's more about putting on a well rounded show with great acts rather than showcasing. We have bands at Pink Dove that need no introduction and some aren't even local.
There have been positive reviews about the first Pink Dove show, did you expect it to be so successful?
There's different types of success, and with a line up like the first Pink Dove it'd have to be successful in terms of putting on a good show.
What should people expect on the night?
A variety of great music. Make sure you get there early so as not to miss the amazing and unique Kilbot Kindergarten.
Will the Pink Dove show become an annual event, or do you believe part of the appeal is its rarity so far?
So far it has been annual, so by the sounds of things it can be both rare and annual. I'd like it if it was.
Lastly, if Laneous & The Family Yah were an animal, what would it be?
Some kind of chimera made up of a very Positive Serpent and some very vocal Pink Doves and a staffy with maybe the magical powers of a unicorn.
