We interview James Walsh - Tour kicks off this Friday in Brisbane

In what guarantees to be a series of incredible shows Sarah McLeod (The Superjesus, Screaming Bikini) will join James Walsh frontman of critically acclaimed UK Band Starsailor on his upcoming March tour of Australia.

AAA's Sarah got to catch up with James before the tour kicks off this Friday in Brisbane!

How did the idea to tour with Sarah McLeod come about?

The promotor thought Sarah would be a good fit for the tour. She also made her name with a band and is starting out a solo career now. I think her upfront energetic style and my more laid back approach will be a a great mix for the tour.

Are you excited to be touring Australia?

I'm very excited. Its been almost 10 years since I was last there! It was amazing to hear that 'Four To The Floor' was doing so well a while back but equally frustrating that we couldn't get over and build on it. So its great to finally say thanks for that!

Where are you most looking forward to going?

I'm most looking forward to going to 'Byron Bay' at the moment. Everyone says it is a big music place with great people and great weather. Plus I believe we are there for St Patricks Day and I have a few Irish friends down there so that will be fun!

What should people expect to see at the shows?

Hopefully people will see a great show and go home happy. We will be playing individual sets but I hope over the course of the tour we can get some collaborations together too. I use a laptop to generate loops and beats so its not a just me and a guitar all the time. I always play the odd cover too. Van Morrison,John Lennon and The Rolling Stones usually.

Is it strange going from performing at large venues and festivals, to performing acoustic gigs in smaller venues?

I've always done smaller gigs even when we were getting quite big with Starsailor. There's always radio promo gigs and U.S shows in the middle of nowhere where the crowds are smaller. I really enjoy it. There's no light show or backdrop to back you up just your abilities as a musician. Its back to basics.

Will you each be performing songs from previous bands, or will there be new songs?

I will be playing a mix of Starsailor and brand new songs. I've been back to a few cities like Manchester and Newcastle and started to introduce more new songs into the set. But if I'm going somewhere I've not been for a while the crowd want to hear the old songs and have a sing song!

After the tour, will you each be continuing with your own solo projects or go back to working with bands?

After the tour I will be going back to my writing projects.(I write songs with other people including Eliza Doolittle,Melanie C and Christina Perri recently) and putting the finishing touches to my solo EP. There is also another film soundtrack ('Lullaby') in the pipeline so its going to be a busy 2012!

Finally, if you were an animal, what animal would you be?

If I was an animal I'd be a Penguin. They look brilliant and they spend time on land and in the water(I love swimming). They do a lot of traveling too which I enjoy. And finally they have a UK biscuit named after them. Such an honour!
