We Interview Oceanics

Sarah got to chat with Elliot Weston from Brisbane band Oceanics!

Oceanics

How did the band begin?

Me and Jackson met each other through high school, we were just jamming out stuff in the garage in like grade nine, and then we met the other members through friends of friends and through school.

What would you describe your sound like?

I dunno, people tend to describe it as Brit-pop, but I dunno. I’m just gonna go with Brit-pop, why not.

Does the Gold Coast influence your type of music and why?

Definitely not. I dunno, music wise the Gold Coast is quite a diverse place. There’s bands like reggae bands, to like death metal bands to indie bands. I feel like it’s in its own musical realm.

What should people expect from the new EP?

Probably a new, fresher sound, sounds of Oceanics but going in a different direction and maybe a bit more produced but in a good way.

What was the reason behind the name of your single “Chinatown (is not Newtown)”?

Well I was talking to a friend of mine sitting in Chinatown in Newtown and we thought that’s a pretty weird name.

What was it like performing at Big Day Out?

It was pretty cool, there were heaps of friends and stuff there, but it was good to get on the bill and play with some pretty sweet acts, so it was a good day.

Would you want to play at Big Day Out again?

Definitely, hopefully on a better stage next time though. I’m sure it will happen eventually.

Are you going to release an album?

Yeah, I think the plan is to record one at the end of the year and release it next year.

After the album is released, would you tour?

Yeah I would say so, depending on how well the singles did and if it got picked up anywhere so I’d imagine there would be an album tour.
