We Interview Myles Mayo

Our new girl in Adelaide 'Hannah' got the chance to sit down with Adelaide's resident genius singer/songwriter, Myles Mayo!

Myles-Mayo

Myles Mayo's musical history includes his role as singer, guitarist and songwriter with Adelaide's much-heralded Special Patrol. When did you make the decision to go solo?

It was in the shower one morning. This apple fell from the shower shelf and landed on my foot. It sort of hit me like an epiphany…. “Genius” … I thought… “a song writer from a band doing a solo album!” I could not believe how original the idea was so I started recording immediately.

Releasing your self-titled record in March this year, what experiences helped shaped this album and where did you acquire your inspiration to undergo a solo album?

The sounds on the album were mainly shaped by the equipment I have in my home studio. I bought a few new bits and pieces and a friend helped collect a bunch of sounds and samples and I started the fun process of shaping all the tracks from scratch.

Where did most of the recorded take place for your latest solo record?

All of it took place at my home.

Leading single “How You Done Me Wrong” has excelled through the Australian Music Industry. When you wrote this song, what was your self-professed thoughts on the outcome of this track?

It was one of the first tracks recorded for the album so I was more concerned with whether I could make it sound any good with my new bits and pieces. I thought it was a funny song. It was supposed to be a parody of an “I-feel-sorry-for-myself” break up song and I liked that tongue in cheek idea.

How would you describe your work ethic in regards to creating new music?

I get urges to record stuff and love doing it so I do it fairly regularly I guess.

Now from my sources I hear you will be embarking on an east coast tour in the coming weeks. What have you found to be the high’s and low’s of touring?

I’d have to say the highs are when you are taking all the drugs with the strippers and the hookers and the lows are the next morning I guess.

Throughout this tour you will be accompanied by Melbourne based Indie Rock band Skipping Girl Vinegar. How did this come about?

I’ve played some shows with them several times in the past and they asked me to play some more shows and I wanted to do some shows so we decided that I would do some shows at the same time as they were doing shows.

What would you say is your favourite song on your latest album?

I think a song called “Young Love Aches” is my favorite.  It just turned out better than I imagined it when I wrote it, which is rare… normally you have all these big ideas for songs and then it is quite easy for the production values to get in the way of these grand ideas.

How is your relationship with Adelaide? When it comes to audience and fans, where is your favorite place to play in? Is there a favorite venue?

I’ve been lucky enough to play at the Thebarton Theatre a couple of times and the vibe and sound on stage there is really great… also love playing at Jive, the Gov and Fowlers Live.

If Myles Mayo was an animal, what would he be?

I’d be a dog that got taken to the park once a day.
