Gig Guide: Black Bear Lodge’s 4th Birthday Party

Fortitude Valley’s beloved little venue Black Bear Lodge is celebrating their fourth birthday this August 29 and they have announced quite a line-up for the party.

Gig Guide August '15

August is a killer month for live music in Brisbane. Here's AAA's list of our two thumbs up approved gigs for the month:

The Triffid: What's on this August

Newstead favourite the Triffid has a jam-packed August 2015, with acts as diverse as Perth hip-hop artist Drapht, Brisbane indie-rock royalty the Grates, and mythical Victorian rockers the Drones. I'm also going to leave THIS HERE. It's just the Triffid's Feedback Cafe menu, and all August AAA is going to be frothing on that Triffid Platter.

Tickets to all shows available via the Triffid website.

THU AUG 6: Drapht and the Funkars

Ever since Jimmy Recard hit top 10 in the 2008 Triple J Hottest 100, it's like everything Drapht touches turns to gold. His fourth album, 2011's The Life Of Riley, produced some of the best singles in Australian hip-hop history, earning a staggering seven ARIA nominations, and a win for Best Urban Album. Establishing Drapht for both his honesty and his ability to pen a hook, it was a breakthrough album in the truest sense. Now, back with another insanely catchy single in Dancin' John Doe, Drapht has dropped the follow-up that fans have been waiting for.

To celebrate the release of the new single, Drapht is bringing the Dancin' John Doe Tour to The Triffid on Thursday 6 August.  This will be the Drapht's first chance in two years to connect with fans and drop new tunes ahead of the highly anticipated release of 7 Mirrors. It's gonna be a big year!

FRI AUG 7: Triffid World: A Night of World Music w/ MZAZA, Unusual Suspects & Coisalinda

MZAZA is one of the Australia's most unique acts. Lead by acclaimed French-Sephardic vocalist, Pauline Maudy, this award-winning group of cultural refugees from Bosnia, Latvia, Greece, Turkey, France, Sephardic Spain and Australia has been mesmerizing audiences with powerful and inspired performances. With a fascination for making something new from the old, MZAZA create their own set of traditions from a tapestry of skillfully woven influences. Unusual Suspects, and Coisalinda will join MZAZA for A night of world-class world music!

SAT AUG 8: The Grates w/ Straight Arrows & Pleasure Symbols

The Grates announce their long-awaited return to the stage with their Team Work Makes The Dream Work Australian east coast tour. With a career that has spanned more than a decade and four celebrated studio albums, it is undeniable that The Grates' outstanding reputation for explosive and energetic live shows has left everlasting memories for fans and festival-goers alike.

In November last year The Grates released their 4th album Dream Team, which was recorded in just ten days and released a month after the announcement that they would be returning to the studio. Joining them on their Team Work Makes The Dream Worktour will be friends and special guests Sydney's Straight Arrows with their reverb-laden, fuzzed out, punk garage as well as Brisbane post punk/synth duo Pleasure Symbols.

TUE AUG 11: Dance to Guitars (Ekka Eve): Black Amex, El Norto, Fluent JB ft. Brisbane's best indie rock DJ's!

EKKA holiday eve at The Triffid is set to rock, roll and put some strum in your heart with a night of carefree dance-floor action. There'll be plenty of hair flinging, arm waving, spirit fingers, and lustful stares across the room—all set to a soundtrack that's better than eating 10 Dagwood Dogs. What's more, it's frickin' FREE people!

Kicking off at 5pm and spinning its way right through until 2am, this is the best workout you'll get all year—forget diets, forget Crossfit, come and dance to guitars!

WED AUG 12: Triffid Seeds w/ Neon Tiger and Shag Rock (Upstairs in the Mezz Bar)

Neon Tiger are students of the lost art of grandeur in rock and roll, infusing a healthy dose of bravado into their every move. Between spinning Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie records, Neon Tiger have found inspiration in the more modern stylings of Panic At The Disco and Walk The Moon, crafting a well-defined sound that transcends genre barriers.

Shag Rock is a Brisbane 5-piece indie band living with uni, beer and music. Started in mid 2011 when they were in high school together, Shag Rock recorded an EP a couple of years later. Now they've smacked out some singles, which are yet to be released.

SAT AUG 15: And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead return to Australia in August to perform at The Triffid as part of their 20th anniversary tour.

Trail of Dead formed as a quartet in late 1994, with key members Conrad Keely and Jason Reece remaining the staple of the band's lineup ever since. The third of their nine studio albums, Source Tags and Codes, was released in 2002 to extensive critical acclaim. The band's latest record, IX, was released in late 2014 to rave reviews for their renewed approach to invigorating, expansive, and experimental rock.

The band's 20th anniversary tour has been traversing the world throughout 2015 with headline dates and festivals across North America and Europe.  The show will feature a wide selection of tracks from across the band's incredible back catalogue.

THU AUG 20: Gang of Youths w/ I Know Leopard, Zefereli

Following the band's triumphant sold-out national album release tour, Sydney–based rockers Gang of Youths are once again hitting the road for a massive national and regional tour across Australia in August and September. Building on their reputation as extraordinary live performers, Gang of Youths will embark on an epic 24-date tour, hitting The Triffid on 20 August.

2015 has already been an exciting year for the band, with a recent sold out national tour, a top 5 debut on the ARIA charts, Triple J feature album, FBi Album of the Week and a plethora of glowing reviews from respected publications such as Rolling Stone, RIP IT UP, Tone Deaf, Neon Gold, The Music, FasterLouder and The Guardian.

SAT AUG 22: Northeast Party House w/ Morning Harvey, Good Boy, & the Creases DJs

After five years of solid touring here in Australia, Melbourne band Northeast Party House are finally set to take off on their first run of dates across the USA, UK and Europe this October. Before they leave, they will host a bunch of farewell parties along the East Coast in August featuring a handpicked list of support acts and special guest DJ sets.

The band have spent much of 2015 in the studio working on material for their follow-up to 2014's debut, Any Given Weekend, and will preview these songs in some of their biggest venues yet. The Later 'Straya party will hit The Triffid on Saturday 22 August. Given the recent success of their sold-out Double Darts Tour, these tickets won't last long!

SAT AUG 29: The Drones 10 Year Anniversary of Wait Long By the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By Tour w/ Batpiss

In 2005 a little known band from Melbourne, VIC, released what was to become one of the most critically acclaimed, celebrated and talked-about Australian albums of modern times. Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By catapulted The Drones into the consciousness of mainstream music critics here and overseas, and cemented what fans of the band already knew.

In May this year, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its release, the band played a special one-off show at the Sydney Opera House, for Vivid Live, showcasing tracks from Wait Long, as well as a few new tunes thrown in for good measure. The show was met with a vigorous response, two standing ovations, and a feeling that more people might want to experience it.
