SURVIVING SPLENDOUR – Lessons in Festival Etiquette

Right, so we’ve had a few much needed months off from the summer festival season- the ringing in our ears is gone, the sunburns have faded as has the horrible shame of hooking up in the mosh after consuming what your friends insisted was only ‘mildly strong MDMA.’ Like fuck. The entire east coast of Australia is indifferently cold, bitterly brisk and as they say, winter is coming… But gird your loins, people! The 12th Annual Arts and Music Festival Splendour in The Grass is back home at Belongil Fields in beautiful Byron Bay. Each year, organisers exceed themselves with the hugely impressive lineup- Jack White, Bloc Party, Smashing Pumpkins, The Shins, Gossip, Miike Snow, Azealia Banks, Lana del Rey, Metric and Mudhoney are the motley crue of headliners and if that’s not enough to whet your musical palette, the visionary wizards at Splendour have astonishingly wrangled post-hardcore hardnuts At The Drive In to play their only international show since the bands tentative regrouping after almost 12 years. What I’d give to have sat in on that pitch meeting- That’s like convincing Oasis to get back together. Kind of… if Oasis weren’t shit. Locally, a mass of Aussie acts such as The Medics, Chet Faker, Gossling, Emma Louise, Muscles, 360, Kimbra, DZ Deathrays and Hilltop Hoods to name just a fraction playing at the 3 day event which is permanently the festival apex of the year, emphatically outshining the year before. I’m not sure if I’m freaking out or just straight frightened.

First handful of Southbound 2013 artists revealed!

It goes without saying that the past few weeks have been mighty chilly, cruel and cold. But, here at Sunset HQ, we’ve been keeping toasty by working hard on things that we think will warm you to your core. We can’t keep this to ourselves for another second - so, here it is, in the form of some Southbound 2013 artists just confirmed! This is the first bunch of artists who’ll be soaking up the summer Southbound sun with us in January.

HARVEST ARTS: Arts Submissions Close July 14th!

In 2011 over 400 artists participated in the Harvest arts program across the three cities – Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.  Across four dedicated stages, 50 installations, and 2 virtual experiences, the skin of festival-going folk goosebumped with sensory delights from some of Australia’s most creative talents. This year, the arts programming team are seeking stage performance, live art happenings, site installations, roaming performance, spoken word, comedy, circus, digital and ecological arts projects – and everything in between to once again tantalize, shock and mesmerize.

The Falls Music & Arts Festival Anniversary Announcement!

The Falls Music & Arts Festival reaches not one but TWO milestone years, celebrating the 20th and 10th anniversaries in Lorne and Marion Bay this year. Ditching the traditional china and tin and preparing for celebrations grander than the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Festival's gift giving has commenced in fine style with the following artists signed up and packing their balloons and confetti for a helluva lota fun in Lorne and Marion Bay this summer.

With the full festival lineup featuring over 80 first class artists each year there’s a lot to be announced as the festival draws near. Here’s a taste of what’s to come (in alphabetical order)…

By combining the sweeping pop orchestration of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, Beach House have become an act whose every album gets filed in the “instant classic” section of your local CD store (or your RDIO playlist – hello 2012). It happened in 2010 with “Teen Dream” and history has repeated itself with this year’s glorious “Bloom”. It’ll be their first tour to Australia playing tunes from their new masterpiece, which promises to be extremely special.

Three stages, eight hours of non-stop music and a variety of genres spanning from indie-folk to heavy metal, Brisbane's 4 Walls Festival is an event geared to bring you the very best of Australia’s freshest up-and-coming talent. Now in its third year, the all ages event has seen the likes of Matt Corby and Last Dinosaurs take to the stage in the past, right before they were swept up into the loving arms of our nation. This year’s festival boasts a similar caliber of talent with The Paper Kites, The Medics, Millions, Cub Scouts, The Belligerents and Fairchild Republic announced as festival headliners.

Held at the Queensland Academy of Creative Industries in the heart of Kelvin Grove’s urban village, 4 Walls was launched by Youth Music Industries in 2010 who saw a gap in the all ages market. Initially set up to provide new musicians with the chance of gaining festival experience alongside some fresh Aussie talent, the festival has flourished into a hotly anticipated sell-out event.
